Security at Resistance Camps: Lessons from Standing Rock

This is a talk about the security challenges we faced at the #NoDAPL camps at Standing Rock, from phone hacking and IMSI Catchers to Cyber stalking and physical sabotage of network gear. I'll describe the tools that we used to track attacks and what we did to try to secure all the things. I'll explain why "automatic updates" on your phone may be both your best protection and your worst vulnerability. We'll also consider the game of "A**hole or Infiltrator" and how to deal with the problem of trust when you have an ever-changing team of volunteers to keep your systems up and running. I'll also share advice on encrypted communication at camp, along with caveats and concerns to consider in all digital communication.
