Virtualized Gaming & Server performance using PCIe passthrough
Do you have 5 computers running all the time at home? Wish your electric bill was lower? Play PC games, but don't really want a separate computer? Want to have two people playing games at the same time but don't want to build 2 computers? Do you like tinkering with state-of-the-art linux configurations and don't need 100% uptime?
Then this session is for you!
We'll go over what GPU passthrough is, and how you can use some of the newest technologies like KVM and QEMU to work with hardware virtualization. This session will make a parts list of the latest compatible motherboards and CPUs, why you may want to invest in ECC RAM, etc.
Then we'll go through the more advanced configuration settings you need to make in order to have it all work right. Note: this is not for the faint of heart. You need to understand Linux subsystems, be able to 'read between the lines' when it comes to GPU passthrough documentation, compile kernels, and be willing to re-install your OS many times over.
Jakob will also demo this setup, which is a FileServer, Media Streaming Server, Webserver, and Windows 10 gaming machine all in one.
By the time the session is done, you should have all the tools required to make a kick ass gaming machine that can spin up as many VMs as your hardware can handle, all while not sacraficing performance!
