There is a lot of Linux-based music software out there (synthesizers, sequencers, keyboards, MIDI, etc.). Some of this software is reputed to be of very good quality.

To see some systems in action go to Youtube and search on "Linux music". Click on the one with the picture of the soldier.

I would like to set up a simple system and learn more about the topic, and would like to compare notes with others, particularly those who have any experience at all with these systems. 

Some of the issues of interest are: sound cards, distro, kernel, controllers, interfaces, other software required.

If nothing else this post may serve as a contact point for people interested in the topic.
