A new wave of powerful, inexpensive, easy-to-use, open source software defined radio (SDR) hardware is promising to open wireless networks to the curious and inventive like never before. Hackers can now not only connect to and traverse new networks, but actually create them entirely from scratch with their own hardware. What would you do with your own 5G network? How do you discover and share new applications to run on your network? What implications do SDRs have for existing network infrastructure operators? This presentation will give a basic introduction to the terminology and physics needed to understand software defined radio, an overview of the current state of SDR hardware and software, and some live demos using some of the newest hardware and software, such as the LimeSDR.
